Face Shields Found to Successfully Block Droplets

The pandemic has brought many changes to our country and the way business is conducted. Personal protection against the spread of infection is now paramount and if you’re a stylist, barber, dentist, hygienist, work in retail or food service, the new normal will be the wearing of face masks and/or face shields.

A face shield is personal protective equipment (PPE) that’s used to protect the user's eyes, nose and mouth from bodily fluids, liquid splashes, particulates or potentially infectious materials. Typically, a face shield is situated at the crown of the head and is constructed with clear plastic to cover the user’s eyes and face. Face shields can be intended for medical or nonmedical (e.g., industrial) purposes.

Face shields come in a variety of styles, but all provide an optically clear plastic barrier that covers the facial region. For optimal protection, the shield should extend below the chin to the ears laterally, and there should be no exposed gap between the forehead and the shield’s headpiece. The major structural components of a face shield include:

  • Visor
  • Frame
  • Suspension

Face Shield Performance Advantages

Face shields offer a number of advantages, especially over masks. One cough simulation study in 2014 found that a shield may reduce exposure by 96% when worn within 18 inches of someone coughing. While medical masks have limited durability and little to no potential for reprocessing, face shields can be reused indefinitely and are easily cleaned with soap and water or common disinfectants.

Face shields are comfortable to wear, protect the portals of viral entry and reduce the potential for self-contamination by preventing the wearer from touching their face. If masks aren’t applied and removed with clean hands, they can transmit infection rather than prevent it. The use of a face shield is also a reminder to maintain social distancing, but allows visibility of facial expressions and lip movements which is important for the millions of Americans who are deaf or hearing-impaired.

People wearing medical masks often wear them wrong or pull them down to communicate with others around them; this is not necessary with face shields. Face masks are basically meant to keep an asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic person from spreading disease to others. Face masks can create extra heat making them warm to wear and if a person wears prescription or safety glasses, fogging is very likely.  In addition, face masks are not meant to protect the face of wearer -- they leave other vulnerable parts of the face exposed, like the eyes.
