Are Your Desiccants Leaking?

Try TranSorb® Non-Leaching Cargo Desiccants

**DISCONTINUED ITEM**Typical Desiccants Leach Fluid

A desiccant is a vessel made of a solid, moisture absorbing substance that induces or sustains a state of dryness in any environment inside its sealed vicinity. Desiccants filled with silica gel, clay, activated carbon or molecular sieve are commonly encountered in the packaging, shipping and storing of pharmaceutical, electronic, food and manufacturing industries as a way to prolong, preserve and protect products.

Desiccants work by a process called adsorption where moisture in the air is absorb between tiny pores as the air passes through them. The water molecules become trapped so the air is dried out as it passes through the filter. This adsorption process is easily reversible making common desiccants re-usable.

If Desiccants Are Heated to a Specific Temperature, They Will Release its' Trapped Water, Referred to as Regeneration.

Typically regeneration is done in commercial kitchen ovens where the desiccant is baked to a specific temperature to dry out the pores for re-use. While this may be an attractive feature for some, there is a negative downside to regenerating desiccants!

Hot, Humid Sealed Compartments & Heavy Machinery Will Trigger Leaching

In applications where internal temperatures exceed the thresholds of the absorbing substance, it can signal the desiccant into regeneration, expelling moisture back into the air volume being protected and causing the packet to leach treated fluid.  There will also be a significant drop in performance. Combined, it puts the treated environment or product in grave danger to moisture damage such as mold, mildew and rust.
