PIP® PYRAD® Arc Flash Kits: 40-Cal Protection with a More Comfortable Fit- The Game Changer!
Arc flash protection can be demanding to wear. Many traditional high-rated suits rely on bulky fabric assemblies that can make reaching, bending, and moving around equipment more difficult.
Two relatively new additions to the PIP portfolio—the 9150-40PYR and 9150-40PYRV—bring a fresh approach. Featuring PYRAD® fabric by GORE-TEX LABS®, both offer lightweight, breathable protection as a more comfortable alternative to many traditional arc-rated and flame-resistant garments.
What Makes PYRAD® Different?
These kits use a three-layer laminate engineered into a single ply. During arc exposure, PYRAD® forms a protective carbonaceous char that helps limit heat transfer to the wearer’s skin. Both kits carry an ATPV of 40 cal/cm² and are identified by PIP as PPE Category 4.
The advantage is how that protection feels in use. PIP reports that its PYRAD® PPE is 20% lighter than comparable products. That is a manufacturer comparison, rather than a promise that every traditional suit weighs 20% more.
For workers accustomed to heavier arc flash clothing, the benefits include:
- Less weight to carry: A lighter garment can reduce the physical burden of wearing protective equipment.
- Breathable comfort: The fabric is designed to allow moisture vapor to escape, helping manage the warm, clammy feeling associated with protective clothing.
- Easier movement: Ergonomic garment design helps workers reach, bend, and position themselves with less restriction.
9150-40PYR: Lightweight Protection with Practical Details
The PIP 9150-40PYR Arc Flash Kit combines a PYRAD® jacket and bib overall with a lift-front hood, hard hat, safety glasses, and carry bag.
Its hood features an impact-resistant shield with permanent anti-fog treatment. The bib’s 20-inch Nomex® leg zippers help simplify putting the garment on and taking it off.
For teams upgrading from heavier conventional kits, this model offers a straightforward way to introduce PYRAD® comfort into their electrical safety program.
9150-40PYRV: The Same Protection, Plus Hood Airflow
The PIP 9150-40PYRV Arc Flash Kit with Fan includes the same core protective components and adds the 538FAN dual fan.
PIP specifies 5–30 CFM of airflow around the head and 8–24 hours of battery life per charge. This added air movement can make wearing an enclosed hood more comfortable, particularly in warm work areas.
The fan model provides a useful option for workers who want PYRAD® garment comfort plus powered hood ventilation. It is listed by PIP as made to order.

Why Worker Acceptance Matters
When workers first try this type of lightweight protection, terms like “game changer” commonly come up. The difference they notice is practical: less weight, more freedom to move, and improved comfort.
That combination makes these kits a compelling option where protection, compliance, and worker acceptance are equally important. A more comfortable kit can help reduce resistance to wearing the required PPE correctly.
PPE selection must still follow the task’s electrical hazard assessment; a 40-cal rating does not make a kit suitable for every exposure.
