As hand injuries remain an issue, study after study reports that wearing gloves dramatically reduces the likelihood of this type of injury—some suggest by as much as 70 percent! And yet still, the most common type of hand injury continues to be cuts or punctures and the number one most common reason those cut or puncture injuries occur is not wearing cut-resistant gloves. Why is that?

MATERIAL BASICS

In a nutshell, there are three main types of cut safety gloves:

1. Metal Mesh Gloves: made with rings of stainless steel, they resemble chainmail
2. Cut-and-Sewn Gloves: made out of a cut-resistant material, it is cut and then sewn inside a glove such as a leather driver glove
3. Seamless Knit Gloves: cut protection is provided by high performance materials offered in different gauges such as para-aramid (Kevlar®), Dyneema®, Dyneema® Diamond®, HPPE (high performing polyethylene) and blended yarns.

COATING BASICS

Available in different textures, coatings are applied to enhance the glove's grip and improve resistance to snags, abrasion, punctures, tears and ooffer liquid or contamination protection. Popular glove coatings are:

● Nitrile

● Foam Nitrile

● Neoprene

● Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

● Latex

● Polyurethane (PU)

CUT BASICS

Cut-resistant hand protection is rated from ANSI Level A1 to A9; A1 cut resistance is designed to protect against light threats such as paper cuts whereas A9 protects against extreme hazards. Gloves are tested and certified to North American Standard (ANSI/ISEA 105-2016) using the TDM-100 machine,
