Cut-resistant gloves are designed to protect your hands from lacerations while working with sharp tools like knives, or sharp materials like metal but not all cut gloves are created equal. Over the years, the glove safety industry has struggled to equate cut resistance with actual cut risk so  a testing method and classification standard was created to help match the best glove for the task.

HOW ARE GLOVES TESTED FOR CUT RESISTANCE?

Understanding the North American Standard (ANSI/ISEA 105-2016):

In North Amercia, the newest edition of the ANSI/ISEA 105 Standard (2016 ed.) outlines a new test method for determining the new cut scores. The ASTM F2992-15 test method allows for only one type of machine to be used, the TDM-100 ensuring a more uniformed approach to assessing the cut resistant performance of cut safety work gloves. The TDM-100 measures a glove’s resistance by running a weighted straight blade over the material  at a distance of 20 millimeters with a straight blade – When the metal blade touches the metal strip, the test is terminated , the cut test results are reported in grams and represented in 9 new levels :

WHAT MAKES A GLOVE CUT RESISTANT?

Unless the glove is made from metal mesh, cut-resistance comes from the yarn it is made from. Almost 98% of the gloves made for the North American market are constructed with Kevlar®, Dyneema® and other HPPE (high performing polyethylene) type yarns such as TenActiv™, PolyKor®, ATA®, G-Tek® etc. Gloves in the A4 range or higher incorporate thin strands of steel or fiberglass wrapped with cut resistant yarns.
