When was the last time you cleaned your laptop, computer mouse or keyboard? Go on, admit it. It has been a while. Chances are, you only thought about doing a bit of cleaning when you last sneezed, and droplets or smudges prevented you from seeing something clearly. A half-hearted swipe may have taken care of that, or did it?Computer Keyboard with Bacteria and Germs

When you think of filthy, germ-laden items you probably think of a toilet seat, door handle, garbage can or the sole of a shoe. But it would probably never occur to you that a lot of the items we use every day are hotbeds of bacteria and viruses that are just waiting to get us sick.

FILTHY SECRETS

A few of the secretly filthy things you never knew you used are items many of us work on all day, every day.  Yes, that thing you use to shop, stream and work on has been collecting a major amount germs and bacteria.

You have many people sharing the same medical equipment, computers or touch screens, all of whom may have been exposed to any number of micro-organisms, germs and even biohazardous materials which translates to cross-contamination. For these shared machines, placing a disposable plastic cover on a keyboard, mouse or monitor and replacing it each shift could be key component of infection control measures and the longevity of the equipment.

TRANSMISSION

Because 80% of common infections are spread by hands, laptops, mice and keyboards are some of the filthiest things you’ll ever come across. Often shared among coworkers, keyboards are particularly vulnerable because grubby fingers mindlessly touch dirty surfaces and then repeatedly go back to typing.  In fact, according to a 2013 project conducted by Bacteriology students at the University of Surrey found that keyboards have three times more bacteria than your toilet seat with as much as three thousand organisms per square inch! A trackpad, on the other hand, was found to have 162 times more bacteria than money during a test conducted by CBT Nuggets in 2016. Think about this the next time you are at your desk typing and eating your lunch or snack.

Obviously, cleaning and protecting a laptop, a keyboard, computer mouse and the rest of its components should be your top priority. Bacteria buildup should never be taken lightly. So, when was the last time you cleaned your computer equipment? Even if you did, did you disinfect it? A keyboard has a lot of nooks and crannies courtesy of all those buttons which are a perfect breeding ground for germs. Simply wiping it down once is not going to cut it. And getting the entire surface disinfected without damaging the unit is not going to be easy.

So, what options do consumers have to protect laptop computers and other computer accessories from particulates, aerosols, liquids, food crumbs dust, and germs without interfering with the functions of the electronic device or keyboard keys?
