LONG TERM HAND COMFORT

HAND PROTECTION IS ONLY EFFECTIVE IF IT WORN!

Engineered by leading industrial glove designers who love gloves, seamless knit work gloves are constructed to be worn throughout all phases of the workday. Advances in glove technologies now allow knitted work gloves to be seamless or rather, sewn without internal seams which quickly irritate the hands as they are worn. In addition,  virtually all seamless knit work gloves offered today are ergonomically designed to provide long-term hand health benefits and amazing all-day comfort, fit, and tactility. Optional touchscreen compatability allows a worker to utilize smart devices without removing protective barrier which otherwise could lead to a recordable hand injury.

WHAT'S THE GAUGE

Gone are the days of classifying a glove as lightweight, heavyweight etc. Today, guessing the weight of a glove’s thickness can be tricky as they are often classified or differentiated by referencing a gauge. Seamless knitted industrial work gloves and glove gauges often go together and for many of us, we realize it refers to the overall thickness, but it typically stops there.

A glove gauge might be the most overlooked feature in knitted hand protection. Let us try to simplify a glove’s gauge and how this can impact it’s performance and fit so you can select the proper glove for the task. The gauge of a glove indicates the size and type of needles used in a seamless knitting machine to construct a glove shell or rather, the number of stitches per inch (or space between the stitches) to determine the glove’s thickness and properties. For example, a higher gauge number (e.g., 21-gauge) means more stitches per inch and less space between stitches resulting in a thinner, more tactile, more dexterous and snug fitting work glove, while a lower gauge number (e.g., 7-gauge) results in a bulkier, less responsive glove.

DIFFERENT GLOVE GAUGES

Here are some popular gauges in safety gloves:

  • 7-gauge – Durable, bulky knit. Good for heavy-duty work applications. A downfall to 7-gauge gloves is that they can’t be easily coated because the space between the stitches is too wide.
  • 10-gauge – Durable, thick knit. Good for heavy-duty work applications
  • 13-gauge – Durable, dexterous knit. Good for general duty applications
  • 15-gauge – Durable, dexterous, thin knit. Good for working with small parts
  • 18-gauge – Highly dexterous, thin knit. Great for precision work with small parts
  • 21-gauge – Extremely dexterous, ultra snug-fitting, ultra-thin and lightweight knit. Excellent for precision work with small parts.

DON’T BE MISLEAD

A common misconception about a higher gauge knit glove is that wearers oftentimes believe they are less protective than a lower gauge solely based on that thinner gauge. Ultra-thin and light weight to wear, 21-gauge gloves are now being offered with ANSI Cut Level A9 resistance against extreme cut scenarios. Another misconception is that lower gauge gloves are thick, uncomfortable, and offer only higher cut protection. Today, this simply does not apply.

Bottom line - it all starts with a glove’s overall fit. If the glove fits well, operators are more likely to perform at a higher level. Gloves with a poor fit can cause hand fatigue and restricted movement, ultimately leading to a worker removing their gloves —and that’s when injuries occur.

When you select a gauge, you are not just picking a number but rather optimizing fit, comfort and performance.
