INDUSTRY: DENTAL MEDICINE

DENATL MEDICINE MARKET

Dentistry, also known as Dental and Oral Medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, commonly in the dentition but also the oral mucosa, and of adjacent and related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial (jaw and facial) area.

Infection Control

Reducing the risk of contamination and infection is an important, yet difficult task in all dental and orthodontic practices. Protecting yourself and your patients is a key component in keeping a clean work environment and preventing the spreading of germs. Infections may be transmitted by blood, body fluids, air, respiratory secretions or by direct contact with other infectious materials. Following infection control guidelines (CFR 1910.1030), using personal protective equipment, and treating all bodily fluids as if they are infectious are ways to do so.

Infection control guidelines are put in place to ensure the basic safety of all parties involved in any given dental procedure. This may include but not be limited to basic use of personal protective equipment, disinfecting and protecting exposed surfaces with barriers in the environment, and sterilizing reusable instruments and tools. Following regulated guidelines is necessary in keeping a clean, safe work environment.

Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.)

Personal protective equipment is required when working directly with bodily fluids, such as saliva and blood. Blood borne pathogens and respiratory pathogens are just two major dangers of practicing dentistry. Face masks, singe-use medical exam gloves, tray covers, and patient bibs are just a few products that will help keep harmful germs and bacteria from spreading. Taking extra precaution by the use of safety goggles or face shields, and lab jackets or barrier gowns may also be required for some procedures. More coverage reduces the risk of contracting and spreading potentially deadly germs.

Extending protection to your patients after they leave your office is also helpful. Orthodontic patient kits, patient retainer or appliance boxes and toothbrushes are available and provide the tools that are necessary to maintain good oral hygiene away from home.
